Over the next few days, life at the antique shop returned to what Jenny presumed was normal. Yet, beneath the calm surface, she knew secrets were waiting to be uncovered.

Faced with her dwindling savings and meager unemployment checks, she was pressured to look for a job. She had sent off a few resumes to please the unemployment office in California but hadn’t had a request for an in-person or Zoom interview. Besides, they didn’t need to know she was staying in Washington State.

How long could she survive like this, hiding from everyone back in California? Her mother’s and Robert’s constant calls were grating on her. She thought about blocking them, but that would only encourage them to come here after her. And then there was the real estate agent, who insisted on pestering her with absurd offers. It seemed they were all out to undermine her decision to stay in Cook’s Cove.

By now, she’d grown accustomed to the strange events here at night and the odd dreams that sometimes frightened her. Unfortunately, the longer she stayed here, the less she knew about why Susan died or left her the house in the first place. If anyone knew anything, they seemed to be content with leaving her out of the loop. Perhaps if she wanted answers, she had better step up and start asking questions.
